The approach to the restoration and reconstruction of architecture has always been a subject of debate. Is it better to reconstruct what already exists or add new elements to give a new identity?
The memory of a place must not be erased and destroyed but the old and the new have to coexist in the same reality. A current debate is the one on the reconstruction of Notre-Dame in Paris where it is not yet clear how to proceed, whether to add new elements or reconstruct. Is it possible to rebuild an architecture avoiding the loss of its authenticity? A successful example is the renovation of the Neues Museum in Berlin by David Chipperfield, who emphasizes the junction between the ruins and the new parts, using them as a bridge between the old and the new.
