Gender empowerment // Inclusive design // Skateboarding
Reclaim
Urban space is gendered, and girls around the world struggle to find their place in the city. Corvetto, a district marked by poverty and crime on the southern outskirts of Milan, is no exception. In this context, the project Reclaim envisions the space of the Cascina Nosedo to be the home of a youth community centre for the girls of the neighbourhood. The centre will serve as a place of gathering, a place of sharing and a place of inclusion. Through skateboarding, girls will learn a range of life skills including resilience, perseverance and determination. It will be their safe space to be silly, loud and free to be their true selves. Skateboarding will also serve as a tool for the re-appropriation of the urban spaces of the neighbourhood, allowing the girls to empower themselves in the urban world.
